Tanya
Smart is a Brisbane artist who uses emotional idioms to
explore and remark upon personal and interrelated identity,
comforting our inner child on its path of discovery and
release. She employs commercial design principles, her
distinguishing palette of colours and strong metaphorical
compositions to create her works. By drawing attention to
otherness, she creates meditations and commentary adapted
to today's sentiment, “my painting are mirrors of my mental
and emotional patterns, they illustrate my experiences, my
relationships and my life.”
History
Tanya's exploration of art, publishing and design started
long before the birth of her sole trading business in 2002.
Tanya studied art and film & television at secondary
school and completed an arts degree in media communications
in 2000. During her arts degree she explored desktop
publishing, graphic design and copy writing as editor of
the student union magazine, Gravity. In 2002-2003, she
focused on painting the idea 'there is a difference' and
manifested the 'creation' series. In 2004, Tanya exhibited
a new series titled 'yogini performs asana'. These four
paintings were the precursor to her future directions in
design and printing.
After becoming a mother and undertaking further study,
Tanya re-established herself in visual arts in 2006 - this
time focusing on fibre arts - dyeing, stenciling and fabric
painting. The 'kaleidoscopic clothes' era spanned until
2008. Tanya created more than 500 pieces of wearable art
within this period, primarily for children, and sold them
through her online stores. She also exhibited in 2007.
Current
Tanya currently focuses on creative writing. A fan of
metafiction and gonzo journalism, she loves deconstructing
life's conundrums into short, colourful anecdotes. Tanya is
a communications professional with a background in digital
publishing and visual arts and qualifications in journalism
and education. She is an experienced blogger, web
all-rounder and avid social media user.
